The swing was originally built by Earl. It hung for many years on the front porch of Otis's house on Pine Street in Boulder, Colorado. When the Pine Street house was sold, the swing was moved to Don's house in Rapid City, South Dakota.

1998 was the summer that Christy opened her own veterinary practice. Otis, Elsie, Rich, and Alan spent several days in Rapid City helping put the finishing touches on the clinic before it opened.
